Housekeeping: A Novel

HousekeepingHousekeeping by Marilynne Robinson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is simply a marvelous book. Read it.

There's a wonderful passage where the author talks about what God was like when he was young and what God is like now. Tremendous insight into the human experience.

The plot is given away on the first page, much like Secret History and much like that book, this device makes the book more intriguing to read. You don't spend time needing to know what happened, you spend time wondering and learning how it affected the people and how they responded.

Meta point
Literary fiction teaches you more about the human soul than nonfiction business books written about the human soul. And, dare I say it, more than some religious books too.
